About the Author
Richard F. Lyon leads Google's research and applications development in machine hearing as well as the team that developed camera systems for the Google Street View project. He is an engineer and scientist known for his work on cochlear models and auditory correlograms for the analysis and visualization of sound, and for implementations of these models, which he has also worked on at Xerox PARC, Schlumberger, and Apple. A textbook with the trademark of a notable author

For those who do not know the author, Dan Djurdjevic is simply one of the best martial arts blog authors of the world. His website has an endless collection of deeply thought articles on the martial arts and related topics, and the subjects are treated with scientific rigor and remarkable clarity. His detail-oriented style is well-known among his peers and the quality of his work is unquestionable.

So, in Essential Jo, the author does nothing but present *Dan Djurdjvic quality* insight on this wonderful weapon - that we have a hard time to find good information about. It's the kind of work that sets the foundation of your knowledge about the Jo, and fills the possible gaps of your instruction. As always, with his detailed, realistic and reliable approach.

On a side note, I would highly recommend the readers to check for on YouTube. There's a promotional video there that actually shows great reference material for the dedicated practitioner, including examples of techniques and drills (including live partner practice) described in the book. I'd suggest the download and careful study the video, as there are hidden gems there (I hope the author decides to submit more reference material such as this in the future -- this is a rare initiative that more martial arts authors should imitate). Also, I cannot emphasize enough the recommendation of Dan Djurdjevic's website, that is a testament on the quality of his work and wealth of his knowledge.

A Finely Crafted Work

There is a Sanskrit saying about knowledge which ends with:

'He who knows, and knows that he knows, is a wise man.' 'Follow him.'

Now it's fair to say that I've been following Dan Djurjevic's blog for quite a few years now and benefiting from the pearls of wisdom derived from his learnings, teachings and research into a plethora of martial arts experiences these past 35 years. Up to and including a brilliant synthesis of style which he has christened “Muidokan''. So when he began his foray into publishing, it seemed only natural to explore his wisdom in a discipline which I had only a superficial knowledge of. On the back cover of 'The Essential Jo', the author makes it clear that 'the book can also be used for beginners for home study' Having recently begun the exploration of kobudo locally, and getting the feeling of what it's like to create mayhem with a 6-foot staff, this unfamiliar weapon piqued my curiosity. The author gives us a rich history of the whys and wherefores of the weapon as well as a detailed understanding of how he approaches its teaching and employment within the system he has derived. There then follows an equally well-written and detailed description of basics including stances, postures, and the proper way to hold the weapon. Thereafter, a sequence of techniques, and drills from simple to complex, all well-written, and equally well and carefully photographed. Notwithstanding it all being well put together, the reality is that there is just so much one can glean from a text. As a retired surgeon and professor, I can vouch for the fact that there's certainly a plus in getting your hands into it under the guide of an experienced mentor. There's something about nuance and technique in movement, as seen in person, that just can't jump off the page. You can take that one to the bank if you've ever studied dance. Video would only be of use to an advanced practitioner. At least a year's background in karate/kobudo training would be a plus for anyone desiring to approach this as a supplementary exercise. Those who are already advanced and skilled in the art
should find this an interesting comparison/contrast to the philosophy,knowledge and skill they have already been infused with. In closing, if you maintain a martial arts library, regarless of interests, this is definitely one sensei whose teachings are worth having at your fingertips.

Dan Djurdjevic explains the use of Jo in a very professional way. It is difficult to find in the internet material related with this weapon, as most you could find is mainly devoted to long staff (bo). As a instructor of Kapap I feel very happy to incorporate this weapon in the curriculum in order to teach my students a handy tool of self-defence. Recommendable!

Excellent Study Guide

This is a priceless compilation of 140 commonly and must-know meds for those nursing students who are currently studying Nursing Pharmacology. Each medication is broken down by the generic name, the trade name, the indication, action, therapeutic and pharmacological classes, and nursing considerations. Each one is listed in a hyperlinked, easy-to-navigate table of contents, giving you the ability to jump right to your searched topic. In addition, there is a section about the common medication classes, followed by study questions. I can imagine, the study of NCLEX meds can be overwhelming to students—this guide cuts hours out of study time and takes you right to the information required for easy memory. The language is simple and readable as compared to the textbooks.

Also included with this guide is “63 Must Know NCLEX Labs,” which is a downloadable 4-page PDF, nursing considerations in flash card format, obscure facts, and outlines some of the other classes of medicines. Another top-notch study guide from NRSNG.com.

Good information, a lot of typos/misspellings

I really like the layout of this book and how it breaks down all of the drugs so simply and in an easy to understand manner. The reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is because of the numerous amounts of typos that are present in the book. I'm not even through the C's and have found 4 that could have easily been caught by spell check. It makes me cautious with the credibility of the book. But it seems good so far.

Well worth it

The characters’ discussions of the nature of magic were entertaining. Everything wondrous in Selenoth, from fireballs to theology, shows a logical consistency almost reminiscent of science fiction. If that kind of thing appeals to you, check it out.

Adding to the realism are occasional insights into the characters’ attitudes toward each other: strong-willed women to men; sons to fathers; leaders to subordinates. I found them quite believable.

And of course, the military action should appeal to wargame and history enthusiasts. The battle chapter with shifting perspectives will be in my memory for a good long while.

Finally, I think it’s great that the author doesn’t introduce a mysterious threat or wildcard and then tease you with it forever. By the end of Book 1, you won’t have it all figured out, but you’ll have an idea of where the overplot is going. This indicates a conclusion is coming in good time—i.e., we won’t have to endure the vague and endless stuffing whereby a story busts its belt. Looking forward to Book 2!

A very good fantasy book with steady action and surprises.

It flows very nicely and each chapter brings the next step to a story larger than its parts. I would not describe it as very deep but it is a very entertaining book with good surprises, interesting characters and a very diverse sense of humor (at times dark, at others sarcastic, etc...)

A Throne Of Bones is many things and if there is one thing is not, it's "lame" or "boring". I enjoyed every chapter and could hardly stop myself devouring the 900 or so pages. Btw, I noticed the size of chapters were very convenient for 15-20 minute reading sessions (if you manage to pace your reading).

I'm looking forward to the rest of the story in the next book and hope Vox will surpass himself.

Worthwhile epic fantasy, don't stop here.

When I first purchased this book, I started the first chapter and then set it aside. Not a very auspicious beginning. Then I read A Sea of Skulls. The writing was much improved, and I was drawn in to the "series". I realized when I started delving deeper into this story, it has some things in common with books like Irving Stone's "Men to Match My Mountains" or James Michener's "Alaska". It is in some ways, historic backdrop for the vast fantasy world that the author offers us. The writing is at times enthralling and prosaic. The banality of human nature is sometimes hard to swallow, thankfully the strength of the storyline carries through. I would encourage readers to continue with A Sea of Skulls, persistence will be paid off in engaging tales of adventure, the coin of epic fantasy. Some other reviewers have made comparisons with Tolkien's works, and I would agree favorably.
