"Casual duplicity picks at the threads of our social fabric," Keyes warns, and not just because it creates a greater tendency toward suspicion and mistrust. The consequences of letting people get away with lying can be severe: when somebody gets a job based on a bogus r�sum�, for example, he or she deprives those applicants who didn't falsify their work credentials. Keyes deplores what he dubs an "alt.ethics" that has made lying more acceptable, and he points to a variety of contributing factors in society, from postmodernism's denial of a literal truth to the ease of making unverified statements online. This largely anecdotal broadside essentially replays David Callahan's The Cheating Culture, though with fresher stories that address recent incidents like the Martha Stewart trial and the controversies surrounding several authors and journalists who have blurred fiction and nonfiction or simply fabricated their stories. Keyes takes a relatively nonpartisan approach; he criticizes Bill Clinton and Al Gore for their false statements, but attacks George W. Bush as the "quintessential baby boomer," accusing the president, and an entire generation, of a self-righteous refusal to confront, let alone speak, the truth. He doesn't offer much of a solution beyond a reaffirmation that lying is wrong and we shouldn't do it, advice that will surprise no one but may get some additional airplay in this heated election cycle.

No one tells the truth

And that's the truth! It turns out kids lie by the age of four, and earnestly. I mean they are so convincing, you almost believe them faster and more than when former President Bush said " Mission Accomplished" and you and 100 Million other Americans thought he meant the War in Iraq ( he meant the Afghanistan Oil line ) any way, its a very good read about how no one tells the truth. So if you want that truth, read this book.

Required Reading For All Americans

This well-researched and cogently written expose should be required reading for all Americans. Mr. Keyes utilizes both anecdotal evidence, and to the extent it is available, statistics and other evidence, to demonstrate that "truth" is a rapidly vanishing value in our current society. He then explains that the ramifications of this value decline are significant; the ability to be able to "presume" honesty is at the core of our relationships, both personal, financial, and professional.

Indeed, dishonesty is our society is so prevelant that the truth-teller is currently at a distinct disadvantage. The witness is a judicial proceeding who tells the truth without embellishment will be discounted, as judges and juries presume that the witness, like all those before them, has exagerrated. Similarly, the job applicant who does not fudge will be rejected, as fudging is now presumed.

Despite its weighty subject, Mr. Keyes' writing style is engaging. Moreover, the validity of Mr. Keyes' points are reinforced by everyday life. I highly recommend this book.

With Beneath the Layers - Finally! Praise be to the book goddesses, finally, and hopefully, Ms. Alexander will let Jax and Alexia be happy and stay happy, rather than torturing them with more break-ups and mayhem. Poor Alexia had broken bones, been repeated knocked up, shot, shocked, set-up for criminal investigation, cheated on, heartbroken, and miscarried. What more could happen to the poor thing? Despite the misadventures listed, these books were enthralling, maddening, steamy, addicting, and just… delicious. Sigh, so glad they got their HEA, yet I am already feeling withdrawals.

I thought the final book was the best one out of the three. I read this one in one sitting. I think this authors writing gets better and better. And I can’t wait to read more from her. Alexia and Jaxson have been through so much. Alexia is a strong women let me tell you that. I love how each book has it’s twist and turns and you never know what is going to happen. Jaxson is spending time with Mia and her new daughter in the hospital. Alexia tries to just move on. But can she? Will Jaxson and Alexia get that HEA in this final book? This series is a must read. Great job!!!

I received this for an honest review.. I have to say that this book is was absolute pleasure to read.. I fell in love with these books with the very book... This book was an absolute roller coaster that I wasn't sure if I wanted to get off. The love story between Jaxson and Alexia was and is such a fun roller coaster.. You just do not know what will come at you next.. That is what I just loved about this last book!!!!

This was a great ending to Alexia & Jaxson's story.

This was a great ending to Alexia & Jaxson's story.

Alexia & Jaxson story is not an easy one to say the least. You NEED to read Layers: Book One (Layers Series 1)and More Layers: Book Two Layers Series before this one, the first two books left you with cliffhangers and this book brings it all together. I would love to say that everything is tied up with a neat little bow but it's not. We aren't left with a cliffhanger as the previous two books but we are left with one very important question...WHY?!?! Now this question will erk you as much as it does me I am sure of it, I don't want to give spoilers but there were two pivotal moments that had me scratching my head in confusion and asking WHY? Why did she feel that way and WHY did he have to die...NOPE NOT TELLING WHO DIES just be warned that someone does and it's not a minor character either.

If you are looking for a story that is all nicey nice...boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl get married and have kids, this is not that story. If you are looking for something with substance, suspense, and then a happy ending, you have found the series for you. I would advise to buy the first three books at the same time so that you can jump into the next book once you are hit with the cliffhanger. Book 4 in the series isn't about Alexia & Jaxson although I am sure they will pop-up at some point through the book. DO NOT LOOK AT BOOK FOUR UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE FIRST THREE BOOKS BECAUSE JUST READING THE SYNOPSIS IS A SPOILER!

Great Finale

Beneath Layers is the third book in the Layers series, and a continuation of the drama that unfolds in Alexia and Jaxson’s relationship. They finally have an “us” in the utmost, fantastic, sigh-worthy, romantic wedding of all time. And it’s a spur of the moment event that takes place on a beach with all family and friends. The exchanging of vows was dreamy, and so romantic, it had me swooning from all the perfect words of devotion and faithfulness. Clearly, this was my favorite part. The other favorite part is the spying of Alexia and Calvin at a Caribbean restaurant by Jaxson and friends as they try to derail Calvin’s plans of seduction. Jules, Nick and Lee had me laughing over their stealthy and hilarious maneuvers.

The story was packed with lots of surprises and great reveals that I did not see coming. Things were not what they seemed, and I think I had a minor aneurism trying to connect all the details. Still, I was kind of convinced of the answers to the questions left from the previous two books. I was sad, though, that one of our beloved characters died in this book. I loved Alexia’s younger sister, Samantha with her sunny disposition, and I ached so badly for her loss. Ms. Alexander did a great job on this series, and I thoroughly enjoyed the hilarious dialogue and funny banter of all the characters. All in all, it was a very satisfying ending, and I look forward to reading Samantha’s story in Beyond Layers.

I thank my lucky stars for this book every day

If you are a parent of a kid with AN and your library does not contain this book, your library is not complete. No, this wasn't the only one that I read when my 12yo daughter was hospitalized after a dramatic 60-day weight loss in summer 2013, but holy heck this was my go-to manual on how to deal with it. I used the resources of the hospital staff and the works of world-famous authors to help as well, but I found myself going back time and again and again and again to read snippets here and there, to get motivated, to get ideas.

In those awful, hopeless moments when it felt like the demons from Hell were building an insurmountable wall between me and the pride and joy of my house, Eva's book gave me solace and hope and direction. When my kid was making the slow transition from hospitalization to full-time at-home and she would flat-out refuse to eat, I wanted to scream "JUST EAT!!!!!," but instead I would revert to the wisdom in Eva's book and, ultimately, all would be well.

That's not to say it was an easy path or one that I would wish on any one. But that is to say that Eva's book smoothed the way a little.

Once, when feeding my girl hamburger and fries, she played with the food and played with the food, moving fries to the right, moving them to the left. Suddenly, she picked up a fry and stuck it, straight up, into the hamburger bun. My inclination was to tell her to stop. Eva's understanding of this horrible disease and the way she conveys it in this book inspired me to wait in that instant. To hold my tongue, To get in touch with myself. So I did. I sensed my helplessness. I sensed my frustration. I realized this is what my kid must be feeling, too. So, I took my own fry and stuck one in my bun to see what that it felt like. It felt better. And guess what? My kid smiled at me. We had connected! Instantly, all the tension in the room was gone. Life was fun. And a few more fries from each of us in the top of our buns, and shortly, all was in our stomachs. Without this book, who knows what would've happened that night. I only know what did happen and why it happened.

Eva's sweat, toil, thoughts, words, wisdom and experience -- as well as those of her own daughter -- are primary reasons my kid is in recovery and has remained so for the last 13 months as of this writing. They are a primary reason I am still sane and, in fact, growing as a human. There's not a day that goes by that I don't internally thank my lucky stars for Eva and this book.

Incredibly valuable skills in this book

When I first read Eva's book, I was immediately drawn in and had a sense I had a companion in the really difficult place of a parent with a child who isn't well that we want so much to help. I found her humor and vulnerability quite connecting and I felt I wasn't alone any more. It's like she really got it. She spoke in such a way it was like hearing from a trusted friend. AND on top of that she gave clear explanations of real life skills that can help so many parents. I can tell this book will have a great impact and help so many families. I am truly grateful for this guidance. What's so amazing is it not only helps parents and caregivers of children and youth with anorexia, but this can be applied to many kinds of difficulties - self-harm behaviors, anxiety, depression, etc.

what is considered typically yet painful, behavior

My daughter has been in treatment for 7 months now and I can only say that I didn't feel "normal" until I read this book! Anorexia is such a lonely disorder for both the patient and their family and Eva takes that loneliness away by telling you what to expect, what is considered typically yet painful, behavior, and how to best handle it. This book is a saving grace in so many ways, it will keep you sane

About the Author
GEORGE W. HOLDEN, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning his degree in developmental psychology with a minor in social psychology, he was a member of the psychology faculty at the University of Texas for 23 years. While at U.T., he was head of the developmental area from 1990 to 1996 and the Director of the Institute of Human Development and Family Studies from 1995 to 1997. For five years (1999 to 2004) he served as Associate Chair of the Psychology Department. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Society and a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and the Society for Research in Human Development, where he is currently President. He has been or is on the editorial boards of Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Family Psychology, Parenting, and the Journal of Emotional Abuse. Dr. Holden’s research interests are in the area of social development, with a focus on parent-child relationships. He is especially interested in understanding the determinants of parental behavior, parental social cognition, and the causes and consequences of family violence. For example, he has investigated how parenting is affected and children are impacted by marital violence. Another topic he has investigated in several studies is parental use of physical punishment and children’s perception of it. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Justice, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and chapters, and the books Parenting: A dynamic perspective (Sage, 2010) and Parents and the Dynamics of Child Rearing (Westview, 1997). In addition he co-edited Children Exposed to Marital Violence (American Psychological Association, 1998) and the Handbook of Family Measurement Techniques, Vol. 2 & 3 (Sage, 2001). He is married and has three children.

The title of this book says it all!

I rarely like self help books nor am I willing to read them from cover to cover, but this book is a an exception. The book expands upon the theme proposed in the title. It is about being honest and real and really brave. The book was very stimulating and offered a new perspective on deepening communication and intimacy with others and more importantly with myself. It starts where other books on co-dependency begin. A fun and stimulating read.

I was tired of being one of the 'nice dead people'

"I was tired of being one of the 'nice dead people' in the world, so the title of this book spoke to me. I was totally skeptical that it could really help. But after reading it I really was inspired to start "dancing in rhythm to the beat of my own soul, and learning how to enjoy it when people freak out about it." (A quote from the book.) It really has become my guide from depressed "doormat" through
overly "obnoxious" aggressiveness to an evolved, enlightened, more empathic assertiveness. Kelly's real life stories, hilarious humor and refreshing theories teach the mechanics of integrity and loyalty with oneself. It is convincing me of the self defeating dynamics behind self sacrifice. Plus the pratical principles and tools of Nonviolent Communication are helping me with my only relationship issue - "Self Abandonment!"

A must read, part of the NVC trilogy.

As soon as I finished reading the book, I wanted to reread it right away, which I did. It fits in my top 10, side by side with other books on the same subject: Non-Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and Stop Being Nice, Be True by Thomas d'Ansembourg (in french: Cessez d'etre gentil, Soyez vrai!). At first, when I saw the title of Bryson's book I was afraid it could be a kind of plagiarism of d'Ansembourg's book, since the titles are so much alike. But my concerns were soon dissipated after reading a few pages. This third book is purely a distinctive essay and an astonishing marvel like the other two. It makes its way using a totally different prose, delivering a mean to grasp NVC from a totally different perspective. Bryson puts it down in a colorful language and a wealth of provocative ideas and imaginative ways of thinking. Bryson also departs from the other two because he wants and likes to play with words and language. Thus his book is also an artwork. I had a hard time at first since I am not accustomed to this kind of writing, but it was such a blessing when I finally got to it. Bryson also likes to say what he thinks, which makes it a lively book, and which enables him to talk about what goes on in his head and heart. This also is a departure from established conventions, and I believe it is a deep source of insight into our own way of beeing. It is also congruent with what he teaches: to be real, open and vulnerable, taking the risk to disclose our self.
Alas the book has many typos. I like to imagine that Bryson made it intentionaly to refrain from beeing perfect. Also, the last two chapters talk about how today's society is bad compared to ancient ones. But I just don't agree with that. Then he stabs men for being violent and promotes women's values. Well this could be an issue in USA, but not quite here in Eastern Canada. Sure men a more prone to be agressive than women almost everywhere in the world, but after all what counts is how this agressivity gets expressed. Men are men and women, women. Then he talks a lot about religion's power. Again an issue in USA but not here. So I wasn't much impressed by these last two chapters. But anyway, this book is still a goldmine to me, the last two chapters simply being veins of lead instead of gold. Of course this applies to me here and now and may not apply to you there and then.
It is certainly an absolute must for whoever is interested in the subject. Enjoy!

We own dozens of French cook books, including all the classics and many books featuring the recipes of great French restaurants. This is our go-to cook book for classic French cuisine. The recipes are superbly written: succinct, correct, intuitive. Bocuse never gives you a direction you do not need, and he never leaves out a hint that you do need. You can find every important French sauce; all the classic preparations of poultry, game, meat, and vegetables; and wonderful soups and desserts. Just the best!
