About the Author
Dr. Stephen Domenigis the Medical Director at the FX Mayr Health Center in Maria Worth, Austria. Stephan has a diploma in FX Mayr medicine, and he worked for six years as Deputy Head Physician at the Viva Mayr Clinic, co-developing their successful medical program me and helping shape the Viva Mayr focus.Stephan studied medicine at the University of Graz, Austria, with a one-year internship at the University of Cagliari in Italy. From there he worked as an assistant physician and surgeon at several hospitals in Austria and Brazil. Stephan has obtained further certifications in orthomolecular medicine, emergency medicine, applied kinesiology, chronobiology and chiropractics.

Learn how to eat

The Alkaline Cure is laid out more like a cookbook than a book about health, but that's a good thing, making Dr. Stephan Domenig's book easy to read and more importantly, easy to follow.
Dr. Stephan starts out explaining what the alkaline cure is, and the science behind why we want that little PH stick to turn green, and the book even includes a packet of PH strips that you can test with your salvia while you read the great recipes in the back. (Mine turned dark green even after I'd had a cup of coffee).
Next you learn how terrible the Western diet is for us, in fact it can even raise the cancer rates of Asians who leave their wonderful low-meat, high veggie diet when they move over here. This book explains why you have all that heartburn and burping problems, and how you can solve it easily by what you eat.
There's a section on how to mindfully eat, while at peace so that your body isn't stressed, because as Dr. Stephan explains, stress makes our tummies shut down so any food we're stuffing in there is going to putrefy and lead to gas. Yikes.
The next section tells you what to buy, some alkaline superfoods, and suggests that you don't drink coffee or alcohol, and that's when I decided that the 2:1 ration of alkaline vs acid might fall apart for me. Regardless, this is an excellent book on what to eat and why to eat it. Cancer loves swimming in an acid environment, so keeping it at the 7 PH is a great idea. I might have to live on avocados if I want my cup of coffee in the morning, but I still plan to use the advice in this book.
What the author doesn't say, is something I learned in another book, and that is we need a high PH in order to heal. It's something about potential hydrogen(my science is rusty) that brings oxygen to any place we need healing, and if your PH is too low, you can't heal properly. (I'm sure he's going to read my review and do an amendment to his book).

Too expensive and too complicated for long-term use

I read this book cover-to-cover and decided to try the diet before writing a review. I want to lose about 5 pounds and I sometimes have stomach issues, so I thought this might help. I created a grocery list based on the recipes for the first two days (I chose Saturday and Sunday so I'd have time to make the recipes). Because the author suggested using organic vegetables, I purchased my ingredients at Whole Foods (yes, I know, Whole Paycheck). For essentially two days worth of recipes I spent about $80.00.
Granted, I had to buy a lot; maybe your kitchen is better stocked than mine, but I didn't happen to have things on hand like: dried figs, goat cheese, turnips, parsnips, fresh herbs, flax oil ($6.99 for a small bottle!), etc.
So, Issue #1: Cost.
Issue #2: Waste. One recipe calls for "1 stalk of celery" but try buying that. You have to buy the bunch and then you only need it for the one recipe. They really need to develop a week-long plan that efficiently uses all the ingredients you're going to have to buy.
Issue #3: Time. The recipes are not quick. I work full-time and really don't want to cook when I come home (crock pots are my friend)-- I will not want to pull out the cookbook and make a complicated recipe. The basic recommended soup requires chopping lots of vegetables, boiling them, and then pureeing them in a blender or processor. I realize this isn't really a big deal, but for me personally it's more work than I want. And I don't want to spend my evening cooking things for the next day, which is a recommendation in the book.
Issue #4: Taste. The recipes weren't bad, but they weren't all that great either. I could certainly eat them for a weekend, but a steady diet of this? I don't think so. I didn't make one recipe where I thought, "well I could make that again whether I'm on the diet or not."
Issue #5: Portion size. There is a lack of clarity in the book around portions. For instance, the soup recipe makes a good amount, but there's no "serves 2" or whatever on the recipe so I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to eat for dinner. Oh, and yeah, that's dinner. Soup. Nothing else.
Breakfast is an olive/goat cheese/zucchini/eggplant dip (think Mediterranean hummus) on a cracker. One cracker. That's it. (Once again that recipe made a bunch of the dip-- but no comment about how much to eat. Can I have it during the day as a snack? I don't know. The book doesn't address this sort of thing.)
Finally, Issue #6: Science. Just Google the alkaline/acid debate and you'll see that there's not much medical evidence supporting the theories behind the diet. Dr. Weil doesn't support it and I tend to rely on his advice about alternative health ideas.
All-in-all, I would recommend you check with your doctor before trying this diet unless you have the time and money to devote to it. I don't think it's a bad diet necessarily, I just think it would be very hard to sustain for any length of time. I have tried several diets and my favorite so far is Paleo. I can shop easily (just think: meat, veggies, and fruit only) and it's more flexible for dining out, and living.

A very important book on how to become and stay alkaline!

I was very impressed with this book, and with the author. This book had loads of really good information and tips, which are good in general, even if you should decide not to go with the Alkaline Cure. What I really loved about this writing style is how simple it was. You didn't have to think about what he was saying, or analyze it. It was all right there and very straightforward. Also, when he said you need to do something, he explained why. I tend to not do things if I don't understand WHY I'm to be doing (or not doing) them, and understand why it's important and helpful. The book is not real long, you can read and understand the concept in a sitting or two. He includes a section for 14 days worth of menus, and a section with recipes for what is on there. The recipes are not too hard or elaborate or timeconsuming, for the most part! What I really love, is on the 2 page format for each day, which includes the menu, he also tells you what you need to prepare for the next day ahead of time, so you can really judge your whole day, without having an ugly surprise later, knowing you should have made something a day or two in advance and you didn't.
I was familiar with a lot of the information in this book. There were several things in here that are included with Macrobiotics (such as chewing the food many times, and not drinking with meals). He explained the reasoning behind this which is so helpful, which I noted above. There also are not snacks included on this, which helps your leptin get regulated. Also info on not eating at night which is important, and he explains. Acid/alkaline is also an important aspect of Macrobiotics. Herman Aihara did a GREAT little book on acid and alkaline, but it was MUCH harder to understand than this book. (Herman got much more technical, to say the least!)
I found this book to be very inspiring! And the inclusion of the pH litmus to test yourself is totally cool! I VERY highly recommend this book!
