Without a doubt the "Harry Potter" series has had a powerful effect on the Millennial Generation. Millions of children grew up immersed in the world of the boy wizard--reading the books, dressing up in costume to attend midnight book release parties, watching the movies, even creating and competing in Quidditch tournaments. Beyond what we know of the popularity of the series, however, nothing has been published on the question of the Harry Potter effect on the politics of its young readers--now voting adults.

Looking to engage his students in exploring the connections between political opinion and popular culture, Anthony "Jack" Gierzynski conducted a national survey of over 1,100 college students and examined these connections as well as Millennial politics. "Harry Potter and the Millennials" tells the fascinating story of how the team designed the study and gathered results, what conclusions can and cannot be drawn, and reveals the challenges social scientists face in studying political science, sociology, and mass communication.

Specifically, the evidence indicates that Harry Potter fans are more open to diversity and are more politically tolerant than nonfans; fans are also less authoritarian, less likely to support the use of deadly force or torture, more politically active, and more likely to have had a negative view of the Bush Administration. Furthermore, these differences do not disappear when controlling for other important predictors of these perspectives, lending support to the argument that the series indeed had an independent effect on its audience. In this clear and cogent account, Gierzynski demonstrates how social scientists develop and design research questions and studies. An appendix of questions and resulting data, including graphs, will appeal especially to instructors seeking to explain the nuances of political socialization.

Gierzynski's captivating analysis of media's impact on political views, combined with the enjoyable Potter story details, makes for an irresistible project that social scientists can use to work a little magic in their classrooms.

About the Author

Anthony Gierzynski is a professor of political science at the University of Vermont. He is author of Money Rules: Financing Elections in America; Legislative Party Campaign Committees in the American States; and Saving American Elections: A Diagnosis and Prescription for a Healthier Democracy. Kathryn Eddy is an artist and a writer for the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus.

A Great Read for Harry Potter Fans and Others

A very readable and fascinating book on the political effect of the Harry Potter phenomenon. A must read for fans of Harry Potter (I think they will love it). But you don't have to be a fan to find this fascinating because the book makes you think about the effects of other entertainment on our political views (the authors talk about other books, movies and shows in the book, like LOTR, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, and South Park).

This read like a very poorly written research paper. It attempted to be multidisciplinary. Attempted. It is really a shame because the topic had a lot of potential.

And he just happens to like to hide

You might remember me reviewing Find Momo last year - I adored it! Well, Momo is on the move again with his BFF Andrew Knapp. This time it's Find Momo Coast to Coast!

Who is Momo you ask? Well Momo is Andrew's border collie. And he just happens to like to hide. And he sits really still while Andrew takes a picture of him. Lots of pictures. Andrew started sharing them with his Instagram friends.....who shared them with their friends.... who shared it with.... and they now have over 250,000 followers!

Andrew and Momo are on the road again as...."adventure occurs when we embrace change. This book is a game of hide-and-seek, a record of our exploration and a review of the journey...which was, of course, the destination."

Coast to Coast takes the duo on a 15,000 mile journey through Canada and the US. And at 100 of their stops, Knapp takes a photo of Momo - hiding. The trick is, of course, to find Momo - although it's not as easy as you would think in some photos! There is an answer key in the back if you get stumped.

Knapp is a talented photographer. His shots range from landmarks to off the beaten path areas and attractions. It was those off the main track photos that I enjoyed the most. My only suggestion would have been to have the photos captioned with locations, although these can be found in the answer key as well.

And, as I did with Knapp's first book - I adored this one as well. There's great photography, the fun of playing hide and see with a border collie - but also the idea of packing up in yellow VW van and heading out to whatever adventure awaits - with a faithful dog.

Find Momo Coast to Coast is just one of those quirky books you can't help but flip through and enjoy. If you liked finding Waldo, you'll love finding Momo.

I'd Rather Be At The Beach: Reviews

Remember those Scholastic find the difference pictures? I loved them! Well this book is kind of like that but it’s only one photo and you have to find a dog. Momo is a border collie who loves hiding while his person takes photos of him. It’s fun to look for Momo, but it’s also neat to see all the photos of the places they travel.

I’ve been a Momo fan for a few years. I love trying to find him in the photos Knapp takes. Sometimes it’s easy to spot him, others it’s not. And sometimes I just give up after looking and looking, but I mark the pages I didn’t find him in and keep the book handy so I can go back and hunt for him again. And sometimes again.

This is a book everyone can enjoy, and it’s fun to do it together with another person or a few people to see who can spot Momo first!

This is the second Momo book, the first was Find Momo: A Photography Book. I haven’t checked it out yet but plan on buying a copy soon.

What a great book! My 2 year old and I look for Momo every morning. She knew where he was in all of the pages of the first book, so we were so excited for the second edition! We hope there are many more to come!

One must keep in mind the context of time and place when reading this emotional and exciting book to alleviate some of the horror of the injustices endured by the women described here. Equality of men and women has not worked out in any society, but the status of women in Islam is more problematic in that canon law is applied according to the social climate. Consequently, countries influenced by the West, such as Egypt, are more relaxed than countries like Saudi Arabia that are ruled by strict Hanbali law, which subjects women to unwelcome marriages, execution at whim, and the boredom of purdah . In this book, Sasson ( The Rape of Kuwait , Knightsbridge Pub. Co., 1991) tells the fascinating story of "Sultana," an unidentified Saudi princess who yearns for recognition in her own right, not as an adjunct of men. For those who wish to know more, Soraya Altorki's Women in Saudi Arabia ( LJ 1/86) and Paryeen Shaukat Ali's Status of Women in the Muslim World (Aziz Pub., 1975. o.p.) are good. Sasson (The Rape of Kuwait, 1991--not reviewed) brings us ``Sultana,'' a pseudonymous member of the Saudi royal family whose memoir documents the suffocating sexism that pervades Saudi life. From minute one, Sultana got the message that only men mattered. Her father had three wives in addition to her mother; her brother, Ali, had sovereignty over his ten sisters. Sultana, we learn, crafted constant rebellions, from smashing Ali's Rolex to leaving his pornographic slides--on which he'd printed his name--at the local mosque for the religious police to find. Arranged marriages were the norm: Sultana was lucky in being matched with a liberal, distant cousin (she was also lucky in being spared the common practice of ritual genital mutilation). She had children, battled her husband, and was thrilled during the Gulf War by reports of the 47 Saudi women who bucked the law and drove in the streets of Riyadh (although rumors persist that one of the group was put to death by her father). But Sasson's device of telling Sultana's story in the first person trivializes the princess's important material. Her voice echoes that of a pulp-fiction heroine (``I was drowning in Kareem's eyes...''), and the endless vignettes of her feistiness--especially the incident of her brother's pornography--verge on incredible. But when Sultana stops talking about herself and takes time to observe, we get amazing details: of Saudi wealth (British interior decorators were imported to redo Sultana's suite on the maternity ward), and of cultural brutality (one friend, caught propositioning foreigners, was drowned by her father in the family swimming pool; another, in punishment for having an affair with a Westerner, was confined to a darkened room for life). Worth paging past the trivial, then, to absorb a chilling and enraging portrait of women's absolute powerlessness in Saudi society. Overwhelming Truth and Insight

As an American Muslim woman who once lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, I became overwhelmed by Sultana's compelling account. As a Muslim, I appreciated her explicit reminder that the transgressions of the Saudi men depicted in the work did not represent Islam. Rather, their misinterpretation of the Quran and Haddith led them to oppress the women of their country, not their true and accurate following of our religion. As one who has worn the abaaya and the veil, and who has met countless women trapped in polygamy in Saudi Arabia and in the United States, I can relate to her experience. Yet, as I was fortunate to be an American in Saudi Arabia, I often did not have to deal firsthand with the cultural oppression of Saudi men; however, I feel that her plight and those of our Muslim sisters is my own. Although Sultana comes from the wealthiest of Saudi families, she accurately and adequately represents the lives of most Saudi women, regardless of socioeconomic status. A Women's Rights Must-Read

In the course of the true life stories found in the book Princess, by Jean P. Sasson, the reader becomes enveloped in the terrible and heart-wrenching lifestyles of middle-eastern women. Through the course of the narrative, though horrifying stories are related in a truly eye-opening manner, the reader discovers a true slice of Princess Sultana's imaginative and vivacious personality, and weeps as it slowly becomes lost in the process of womanhood in Saudi Arabia. "The history of our women is buried behind the black veil of secrecy. Neither our births or deaths are made official in any public record. The common emotion expressed at the birth of a female is either sorrow or shame." These few sentences, which bring about the whole theme of the non-entity of women, lead us to much more shocking crimes against women which, in that society, are not considered to be crimes whatsoever. The stories of Nadia, who was drowned in the family pool by her father as a way of "protecting her honor", her sister Sara, who attempted suicide after being sold as a wife to a sick and sexually brutal elderly man, and a brave Filipino maid named Madeline, who was raped nightly by all the male members of the family she served under, illustrate how Jean Sasson was able to intertwine other supporting character's stories with the life of Princess Sultana effectively and believably. Some stories, which show how these incredibly courageous women, can survive in this kind of life, bring the reader to cry and cheer simultaneously. Others, which, sadly, lack the happy ending we could hope for, are gut-wrenching due to the fact that they are horribly true. Behind the black veil of the Muslim women lie incredibly diverse personalities, characters, and spirits, which come alive to us through the voice of Sultana. I admired how the life of one woman, who lived a lifestyle vastly different from those of her readers, could showcase such a passion for life that I was able to relate to her and her stories. While listening to her descriptions of daily crimes against others like her and her description of her feelings of powerlessness, causes the reader to have feelings of injustice stir within them. During the episode where Sultana finally uses her ingenuity to it's potential and manages to flee her country and abusive husband, you are able to applaud her efforts and cheer her on. Overall, this book becomes a touching experience for most, if not all, who read it. Through the coldheartedness of males such as Ali, her brother, and her father, it is a miracle that Sultana manages to respect members of the male race when it is entirely obvious that they have little, if any, respect for her. "I waited for my destiny to unfold, a child as helpless as an insect trapped in a wicked web not of it's own making." Although this statement was Sultana's, it translates the general feeling of oppression hidden behind the black veil in the middle east. Indeed, these words could have been spoken by nearly every female character in the book, because they all, at one point in time, are overcome with the feeling of helplessness and realize that there is not one person who can deliver them from whatever circumstance they are in, because they are all suppressed by the male race. The men are nearly all, with the exception of King Faisal, portrayed as the iron fist in the velvet glove. Their views of women, and how they make their opinions clear, is extraordinarily chilling and saddening. The dignity, the souls, and occasionally, the lives of these women are lost throughout the course of the book. The issues that are addressed, such as honor killings, sexual slavery, arranged marriages, and female genital mutilation, all bring to mind the horrors that still exist today. In conclusion, although this is first of all a must-read for anyone with an interest in human rights and women's rights, I would strongly recommend it to anyone. It touches the heart and stirs the soul so that the reader cannot help but be moved by the stories of these women. Hopefully, with this book's publication, the fact that Sultana risked her life to allow her story to be heard will not have gone in vain.

Additional Truths about this life Behind the Veil

I am an unbiased reader, yet one with first-hand knowledge of social customs of Saudi Arabia. I lived for over 8 years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and worked as a nurse in the King Faisal Spec Hosp and Research Ctr. Anyone with the slightest understanding of the Kingdom and the manner of life for women in that country is fully aware that the stories told in Princess is the sad reality of life for women in that country. The only people who have a hard time believing Jean Sasson are people who have never lived in Saudi or possibly jealous people who simply want to attack a good book. As a nurse, I personally cared for Saudi women at the hospital who had endured horrible acts of cruelty from their Saudi husbands. I can say with certainty that many of the stories told by Jean Sasson are duplicated many times over in the daily lives of women in that country. I took care of a 13year old girl, who was suicidal because she was being forced to marry a very old man in his late 60's. She considered herself bright, and she was, and wanted to be educated and have some choice later in life who she was to marry, but this was her parents decision. They would either give drug therapy or electrical shock in some cases to make the women more compliant! I was the nurse in charge when a Saudi princess was locked away in a private room in the hospital. She had been abducted from the West by her own government and was forced to return to the Kingdom. The look on that poor woman's face when she discovered she had been drugged by her own American doctor and brought back into the country on a private jet, I will never forget! (The American doctor and his wife had accompanied the Saudi woman, and they went shopping daily, returning to the hospital with priceless jewelry that had been their payment for the duplicity. It is not only Saudis that can be unfeeling when it comes to women!) To tell the truth, there were so many unbelievable horror stories, that I personally witnessed in that hospital, that I could write a similar book myself! I must say, that I love the way Jean tells the story. It is wonderfully readable and the stories remain with the reader forever. I recommend the book to all my friends and thus far, to a person, everyone has read the book straight through. If you want the real truth of Saudi Arabia and the lives of the women who live there, then I recommend this book. Worst Business Text Ever

As a student this was one of the most difficult books to get through. I used this book in my senior capstone course for administration. It addressed many topics that were covered in prior classes, I learned very little from reading the book as I had much of the information pounded into my head in the numerous classes prior to my capstone. This book is very wordy and exhaustive to the point that torture may be a better option than reading. Relevant but hard to read and very few pictures.

The right textbook and the right price!

I needed this to complete a college course. The college bookstore was wanting $92.00/new for this in an e-book and I found it here for 63% less in hard copy! The condition was listed as "Good" but it arrived in "Like New" with all pages, no markings or notations on any of the pages.
I personally much prefer a hard copy/printed book to an e-book. It's easier to go right to the page needed and find the information faster than waiting for pages to load.
Need textbooks without the high costs? This is the place to find them!

Like my other books I use a no nonsense approach with lots of memory tips, insights, reviews and exercises over ninety pages to help you get up to speed as quickly as possible and the whole experience is extremely 'hands on'. In fact part of the process involves scribbling on the cards a lot to make sure the basics are implanted in your mind as you go.

I'm really hoping that this new book gets some of you on the road to giving proper and interesting readings with cards instead of just thinking about it. There's a lot more information hidden in those fifty-two bits of paper than you probably realise!

I have in the past purchased Julian's James Bond Cold Reading book and his Palm Reading book. For me this is one of the best. I find I am more in tune with numbers than the others. I always have a deck of cards and certainly the places I frequent there are cards as well.

The fact that you can use a few cards, a few more to create a simple or more complex reading is terrific. Make it as long or short as you'd like.

Julian's audio book (available for free from his site) is also top notch! Lots of valuable audio files to use while driving or sitting in a Doctor's office.

About the Author
Julian Moore is a composer, songwriter, music producer, author and mentalist.Interested in all things strange from an early age, his writing took aback seat to his musical endeavors until fairly recently, when heembarked on a writing spree revolving around the practice of giving'readings' - palmistry, graphology, cartomancy and the pseudo-sciencesbehind them such as 'cold reading'.

Julian is now embarking on aseries of novels which should be available in the not too distantfuture. One involves an adventure with some dogs in a region of India.Another surrounds the haunting of a student pianist. There could be some others that deal with a little girl and her friends who discover somestrange abilities. Who knows.

Best available book on cartomancy

This is the best book on cartomancy that I know of, and I have read many books on the subject over the last 40 years. Great for beginners and even experienced readers may find something new here, too. Julian Moore writes extremely clearly and has a great system for remembering the meanings of the cards. There is homework! But it is easy and fun and if you follow his program you will very soon be reading cards in a real and meaningful way.

Worked better than I imagined

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning cartomancy. When I have bought 'How to' books in the past, it seems like I start reading them but get bored within a few chapters. This was not the case with 'Speed Learning Cartomancy'. The author keeps you interested by having you stop reading, breaking out your practice deck, and doing some fun practice work. I didnt get bored or lose interest once and I was doing readings for my friends in no time. I hope you have as much fun with this book as I did and may the Cards fall in your favor ;)

A CUT ABOVE!

Speed Learning Cartomancy is absolutely THE WORK in this field. Not only does it strip away the multi-level confusion that so many other books and systems leave you with, but in moments you will begin to FEEL the "power" in card readings!
Having read so many other titles on card reading THIS was the one that finally made it all click.
