A Valuable Resource

As a veteran auditor, I highly recommend this book. I found the book to be incredibly well-organized, focusing on those issues truly critical to effective fraud audit. The author makes effective use of graphics and examples, making the text more accessible and rising it above the level of a standard fraud theory book. In short, he provides practical guidance that can help firms respond to and manage their fraud risk. I also think it's worth mentioning that author devotes a portion of the book to the topic of data mining. Given the modern business environment, knowledge of these techniques is an absolute necessity and reason enough to purchase this book.

For those expecting to receive a high quality catalogue of the British Museum's Rosetta Stone exhibition, you will not be disappointed. But as an added bonus, the essays are not pedantic and dull, but eloquent and informative. They detail not only the finding of the stone and its impact on Egyptology, but also include chapters on the development of the Ancient Egyptian language, the scripts, tools used to write, and the ways in which these reflect the Egyptian world view.
Richard Parkinson's writing style makes this a joy to read! I would recommend it not only to those interested in the exhibit (the photos are of excellent quality), but those interested in Ancient Egyptian language and Egypt in general.

This book was written as an accompanying extract to a British Museum exhibit celebrating the bicentenary of its discovery, and accurately presents the important Rosetta Stone. This is achieved by means of outlining the Stone's history, controversy around its discovery and its deciphering which gave the key to understanding the hieroglyphs. Using this as his starting point, the author continues to explore the role, power and importance of writing in Ancient Egypt as well as its many aspects (such as scribes and the tools used) and its relation to art. Other decipherments (Linear B and Meroitic) are also considered in this book. Readable, enjoyable and very informative, accompanied by black & white illustrations, it is recommended for anyone interested in the Ancient Egyptian language.

Thought is to be tested by its fruits. The constructions of thought are not copies of or transcripts of reality; they are programs, guess-work plans; possible programs for operation. Their validity is to be measured not by verisimilitude but by value. The fruits of thought are not “true,” but especially where they are false, it may be important to act as if they were true… Vaihinger’s chief originality consists in his defining of fictions and his distinction of fictions from hypotheses on the one hand, and from dogmatisms on the other. An hypothesis is a tentative discovery about the universe; a fiction is a deliberate, often clearly false and internally contradictory invention of thought… Evolution is the hypothesis that man is descended from the lower animals. We assume that we can indirectly turn to the remote facts which would justify that hypothesis. But the concept of infinity in the calculus, the atom and the ether in physics, the economic man in Adam Smith, are deliberate self-contradictory fictions, and fictions at variance with all experience. But though they are not only imaginary, false to the reality they allegedly represent and logically incoherent, they nevertheless facilitate thought and proper action. They are vital lies, human conveniences. They are the faiths, the palpably false faiths, the clearly useful falsities by which we live… The discovery that fictions were fictions has led, in the past, says Vaihinger, to an abandonment of them, and a turning to other fictions believed to be truer. Pathetic and foolish adventure! What the race needs is more faith in its own effective imaginations. The myths that it has told itself, the world pictures that it has made, are not to be dismissed because they are found to be creations of the imagination. They tally with no world and they carry the canker of logical inconsistency within them. The important thing is their utility; their human scope and mortal relevance. If we ceased making fictions, we should cease altogether to be. Let us beware to plunge from fruitful fictions to less fruitful ones that masquerade as truths and are really dogmatisms. Although the author seems to have struck to the core of human motivation -that is, living one's fictions "as if" they were reality, similar to Ernest Becker's theories claiming that cultural fictions are created by mankind to deny death - his dry, incomprehensible style and monotone writing made the theory mostly inaccessible.

Great book for those starting with meditation.

Did you know meditation is good for your mind, soul, and health? This is a great book for someone that is just getting started with meditation.
Meditation does not have to be hard or very time consuming. It’s all about taking time out of your busy day to concentrate on you. There are many 10 minute exercises.
No matter who you are, what kind of life you lead; we can all benefit from the practice of meditation. It’s a great way to reduce stress and anxiety without medication.
This was a quick read and great to have on hand when you need to just relax and close off your mind for a few minutes.

A Must-Have Beginner's Guide

Since I was a teenager, I've had a deeper understanding of meditation than most. I don't say that to sound conceited, but just to give you a better understanding of my experience prior to having read this book. I have read numerous guides, watched numerous tutorials, and have studied up on the science behind meditation.

With that said, I "fell off" of the wagon into my adult years and more recently, have attempted to reconnect with the more spiritual side of myself. I found this book to be exactly what I needed to refresh my mind and jump back into the art of meditation.

This guide is a true beginner's guide, and helps you to take a look at your thoughts to apply new ways of thinking so that you may gain a stronger appreciation of even the most (seemingly) trivial moments. You'll learn how to meditate, when to meditate, positions in which to meditate, as well as methods for practicing almost anywhere.

What I loved the most was that the book discusses the importance of BEFRIENDING the internal chatter in your mind, instead of simply repressing it. This is critical to maintaining a quality meditative state and is incredibly important when you're just starting out. I recommend this book to beginner's, intermediates, and those looking to reconnect with their inner selves.

Meditation Now is a Life Enhancing Book that is a Joy to Read

What I love about Meditation Now is that it is not only a thoroughly informative book for the beginner, but it is so enjoyable to read. It's a fine example of "the medium is the message," since I began to find myself in a very quiet, peaceful state after reading just a few chapters. There are so many excellent features of the book. Meditation is explained in an academic, cerebral way, but the author also makes it simple to understand. There are practical plans for ten minute meditations that even the busiest professional can fit into his or her day. Stress is one of the worst enemies of physical and mental health, and meditation is probably the best and most potent antidote. Best of all, meditation is all natural and free, and anyone can do it. Meditation begins with a sitting practice in which the individual focuses on breath and internal awareness. There are also ways to meditate with movement. My favorite passage is about walking meditation "kissing the earth" with the soles of your feet and leaving imaginary pink and white lotus blossoms where you have just stepped. Creative passages like that made reading this book a true pleasure. A copy of the book was provided to me at no cost in exchange for an impartial review.
