Helen Joy Davidman (1915-1960) was an American poet and writer, a radical communist, and an atheist until her conversion to Christianity in the late 1940s. Her first husband was the writer William Lindsay Gresham. Her second marriage was to the writer and Oxford don, C. S. Lewis.

Joy separated from her first husband and moved to England in 1954 with her two sons, David and Douglas Gresham. Lewis at first regarded her as an agreeable intellectual companion and personal friend, and it was at least overtly on this level that he agreed to enter into a civil marriage contract with her so that she could continue to live in the UK. It then became clear that she had terminal bone cancer, and the relationship developed to the point that they sought a Christian marriage in 1956. She recovered briefly, but eventually succumbed to cancer. Lewis wrote "A Grief Observed" in response to her death.

Who was the outspoken, dynamic woman named Joy who became C. S. Lewis's wife? Originally published in 1988, I found this story of the life of this extraordinary woman to be an ideal compliment to George Sayer's biography of C.S.Lewis originally entitled "Jack: C.S.Lewis and His Times" (1988) reprinted by Hodder in 2005 as "Jack: A Life of C.S.Lewis."

"Joy Davidman was born into a Jewish family in New York City, 1915. Both sets of grandparents were immigrants who practiced their religion, Joy's father did not, in fact he brought up his children harshly, insisted that they follow his atheism, and put great pressure on his children to achieve. As Joy was very bright, beyond her years, with an exceptionally high IQ, she gained entry to University at an early age and was writing poetry and short stories from the start.

"These early chapters did not describe a particularly likeable young woman, by the time she married at twenty-seven, she and her husband were committed members of the Communist Party but both were aware there was something missing in their lives.

"The story continues, telling how both Joy and Bill became Christians, Bill to drop away, becoming an alcoholic, Joy to grow nearer to Christ, drawing great comfort from the writings of C.S.Lewis.

About the Author

Lyle W. Dorsett is a Professor at the Beeson School of Divinity at Samford University. He is a former faculty member of Wheaton College, and a bestselling author. His books include "A Passion for Souls: The Life of D. L. Moody" and "The Essential C. S. Lewis." Lyle and his wife, Mary, founded Christ for Children International, a mission to economically impoverished children in Mexico.

Out of the Shadows (II)

This was the first full-length biography ever published of Joy Davidman, who, though a noteworthy poet and author in her own right, would be most remembered as the wife of British scholar and author C.S. Lewis. The story of their marriage and of her tragic, premature death from cancer was already familiar to me from a number of sources, mostly focused on Lewis; yet I knew only generalities concerning Davidman's earlier life in America. AND GOD CAME IN does much to correct this and is built on extensive research into her many letters, the reminiscences of friends and surviving family, and her own writings. The endnotes at the back of this new edition thus span seventeen pages!

Dorsett himself is not a flawless writer, but overall I found his work here an engaging and very helpful new perspective. The hardships (even those somewhat self-inflicted) of Davidman's younger years, and her once deeply ingrained biases, cast her later Christian faith in a fresh and more impressive light.

The first edition of this work was also the source of many elements portrayed in the original 1985 BBC-TV rendering of SHADOWLANDS -- details I had encountered nowhere else and had long thought apocryphal. However, while that interpretation was far superior to the better-known 1993 cinematic version, Dorsett, in a new Preface, here expresses his dissatisfaction with either film's depiction of the Lewis/Davidman relationship, and takes the opportunity of the book's reissue to set the record straight on various points.

Although this story is deeply moving -- of two very different individuals who found (or were Led to) each other at a time when they needed the love and support their friendship and eventual marriage would provide -- Dorsett is correct in asserting that Joy deserves better than to have her own life's record 'obscured by the shadow of C.S. Lewis'. I rather think Jack would have been the first to agree, and to applaud this admirable attempt at re-introducing the world to a remarkable woman of ardent faith yet full humanity (with all the complexity which that implies).

Its a God Thing

C. S. Lewis was perhaps the best known Christian writer of the 20th century. You would be hard pressed to believe this love story. The journey that led Joy Davidman (a Jewish, communist, Christian) to become the wife of the confirmed bachelor, Christian, academician C. S Lewis is well worth the read. Lewis entitled the story of his awakening as a Christian "Surprised by Joy". This improbable love story may well be subtitled "Surprised by Love".

About the Author

Ted Dunning is Chief Applications Architect at MapR Technologiesand active in the open source community, being committer and PMC member of the Apache Mahout, Apache ZooKeeper, and Apache Drill projects and serves as a mentor for these Apache projects: Storm, Flink, Optiq, Datafu and Drill. He has contributed to Mahout clustering, classification, matrix decomposition algorithms and new Mahout Math library, and recently designed the t-digest algorithm used in several open source projects. He also architected the modifications for Open TSDB described in this book.

Ted was the chief architect behind the MusicMatch (now Yahoo Music)and Veoh recommendation systems, built fraud-detection systems forID Analytics (LifeLock), and has issued 24 patents to date. Ted has aPhD in computing science from University of Sheffield. When he’s notdoing data science, he plays guitar and mandolin. Ted is on Twitter at@ted_dunning.

Ellen Friedman is a solutions consultant and well known speaker and author, currently writing mainly about big data topics. Decent TSDB overview

This book specifically centers around time series databases (TSDB). Although collecting and analyzing time series data is not new, as the authors explain, the current task of building scalable time series databases is a huge challenge, calling for new approaches and new tools in light of the immense volume, velocity, and variety of data especially associated with machine data.

While time series databases are not a distinct category of databases apart from relational, key-value, column-oriented, document-oriented, and graph databases discussed in such books as "Seven Databases in Seven Weeks: A Guide to Modern Databases and the NoSQL Movement" (see my review), use of databases for time series data serves a distinct purpose. For example, Apache HBase is a column-oriented database that can be used for time series data.

Dunning and Friedman first explain the value of using time series data, and present an overview of modern use cases followed by a comparison of relational databases versus non-relational databases in the context of time series data. The latter half of the text provides an explanation of the concepts involved in building a high performance time series database, followed by some brief discussion on related topics.

The authors correctly state in their introductory chapter that time series data indicates when something actually took place. Because data can be recorded long after it is measured, time series data does not actually indicate when it was recorded. Such data requires a bitemporal database, which is beyond the scope of this book. Readers might be interested in knowing that an excellent (although very long-winded) book exists on this subject entitled "Managing Time in Relational Databases: How to Design, Update, and Query Temporal Data" (see my review).

Readers should be aware that Hadoop-based databases Apache HBase and MapR-DB are the focus in this book because they can rapidly ingest time series data, and also provide support for rapid, efficient queries of time series data. Usage of Open TSDB and Grafana alongside either of these databases is also discussed, just realize that MapR-DB extensions that enable direct BLOB loading are presented as the solution for accelerated performance.

Of the 8 chapters in this book, Chapter 3 ("Storing and Processing Time Series Data") and Chapter 4 ("Practical Time Series Tools") are the core of the book. Conversely, Chapters 5 through 8, while providing brief glimpses into some interesting related topics, do not provide much value and can be safely skipped by most readers. A decent 70-page read available free from O'Reilly that can be consumed in an afternoon.

Rachel Glennerster is executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kudzai Takavarasha holds degrees in chemical engineering and economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a policy manager at J-PAL from 2004 to 2012.

Bought this for an M&E class. While the topic an be a bit dry and technical to a novice like me, I recognize that the author still did a good job in making the concepts understandable and engaging (as much as possible). I've read other related books and taken statistics, and generally the texts are more difficult and boring to read. Rachel Glennerster also has a blog based around the book, with online resources that I find interesting.

This book is fantastic. It is easy to read and delivers a very important message : randomizing is the key to statistically evaluate the impact of projects. The authors use many different examples of evaluations that help visualize ans understand the whole process.

I work for USAID and I hope this book will be used to inform our staff about impact evaluations: when to use them and how to set them up so that they provide the precision needed and within a reasonable budget.
