Something missing ?

A friend of mine offered this book to Tenzin Namdak, actual head of B�n lineage, supposed to achieve rainbow body when he will leave. He didn't seem so much interested and said that the drawings are correct, but "something is missing. They didn't get the fruit", i.e. they won't achieve rainbow body.
Now, the question is "what" ? Maybe we have a first clue, in the fact that their approach is totally naturalist. There is only earth, nature, light... Where are the buddha fields, the revelations, the transmissions, one is supposed to get with the third vision ? Just read the life of Shardza Rinpoche and others. It's totally different.
Apparently it is possibe to get the visions (or a part of them) without getting the real meaning. Because, according to many teachings, there is no "matter" in the universe, only "beings" (what we call matter being alledgedly the "body" of beings, who we can't see because of our obscurations). But in this book, there are no beings, only matter.

Luminous Heart of Inner Radiance - Drawings of The Togal Visions by Robert and Rachel Olds

Spiritually focused artists Robert and Rachel Olds culminated a lifelong Earth based spiritual path of meditative practice by going on an 8 year retreat practicing Tibetan Buddhism's and Bon's highest visionary path of Togal. Along the way, they documented with skilled, sensitive drawings documenting the unfolding progression of the four stages of Togal visions. To my knowledge, nothing of this kind has ever been presented in the public domain before.
Also distinctive in publishing these beautiful images of the Togal visions and their accompanying volume describing the actual practices that took them up to and through the path of Togal, Primordial Grace - Earth, Original Heart and The Visionary Path of Radiance, Rob and Rachel strip Togal of its here-to-fore religious and cultural baggage and restore it to its primordial, grounded in the Earth, roots. I realize this will be seen by some as a controversial description of a controversial act but surely, the Togal process of seeing the essential nature of the spontaneous presence of the primordially pure innate is antecedent to all forms of culture and all -isms.
Personally, the powerfully gentle and sensitive images in this volume deepened my faith and quickened my spirit. They led me to contact Rob and embark on this remarkable journey. In my experience, as the visions are beginning to develop, this process is increasingly engaging. I am gratefully finding myself silenced, awed and wanting to practice more than ever before in my 40 + years of spiritual focus. Enjoy!

I am so glad this book was written and illustrated. This is a clear and unencumbered account of the Togal visions as experienced by the authors. This book is very much a gift to anyone seeking a deeper truth about the true nature of reality.

This classic, calculus-based introduction to the theory and application of statistics provides an unusually comprehensive depth and breadth of coverage and reflects the latest in statistical thinking and current practices. New to this edition is the addition of an applications section at the end of each chapter that deals with the theory presented. Further emphasis has been placed on the use of computers in performing statistical calculations. Topics covered include probability distributions and densities, random variables, sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, regression and correlation, variance, and more. An excellent reference work for professional statisticians in a variety of fields.

The seventh edition of John E. Freund's Mathematical Statistics, like the first six editions, is designed primarily for a two-semester or a three-quarter calculus-based introduction to the mathematics of statistics. It can used, however, for a single-semester course, emphasizing probability, probability distributions and densities, sampling, and classical statistical inference. For this purpose, the authors recommend that the course be based on Chapters 1-6, 8, 11, and 13. In addition, Sections 2.8, 4.8, 5.8, 5.9, 6.7, 8.7, and 13.8 may be omitted. In teaching this abbreviated course, the instructor may facilitate fitting the material into the time allotted by choosing several other sections to de-emphasize.

The major departure in this edition is the addition of a section at the end of each chapter, called "The Theory in Practice," and dealing in greater depth with some of the applications of the theory. The applied exercises in each chapter have been grouped together at the end of this new section. Subheadings have been supplied to indicate which exercises go with which section or sections to aid the instructor in assigning homework exercises.

Many students taking this course are experiencing the ideas of statistics for the first time. It is believed that it will be helpful for them to spend some time learning how the mathematical ideas of statistics carry over into the world of applications. To emphasize this new treatment, the authors have added "with Applications" to the title of the text. In addition, further emphasis has been placed on the use of computers in performing statistical calculations. Several new exercises have been added, many of which require the use of a computer. New material has been added to Chapter 15, placing additional emphasis on experimental design and factorial experiments.

Not enough Pictures

Yes, even at the collegiate level, pictures are needed. The example problems rarely drew the diagrams/pictures. Also many of the problems refer back to previous examples in different chapters. For example, a problem in Ch 7 has us take the information for a problem in chapter 3; without a corresponding page number. Also the lay out of book is very compact. I wish the authors did not squeeze so much information on one page. The could have used more space, showed much more algebra steps, and MORE DIAGRAMS.

I'm taking a course in statistics as an independent study using this book. It might have been better had I been taking a class with a professor helping me understand the problems, but trying to understand with just this book is next to impossible. The examples skip steps, which I suppose I am just suppose to know, with no explanation or note that there have been operations omitted. This is very confusing. I have been teaching math for 34 years and feel I can follow the flow of a problem, but I teach my students to include everything to make sure their work is understood. Even the examples that are worked out sometimes have little to do with the problems that you are asked to solve. All in all, I feel this book is not well written for someone trying to learn these processes.

terrible book

I am using this textbook in an undergraduate class on mathematical statistics. The book has many misspelling even at places where comprehension could be jeopardized. Many exercises tells you to refer to previous exercises which you may not have already solved. In general it is annoying that the book has too many references to previous results that are not even that important; you have to do a lot of page flipping. The textbook could have benefited from providing more examples as usually the examples after a section don't cover all that is discussed. Important results do not stand out enough for easy access and sometimes there are hidden parameters buried in the text before a theorem. There really is nothing special about this book. All problems are pretty straightforward computations. The text avoids proving how a result is derived when it is beyond the level of the text. This makes it seem like I am just plugging in formulas rather than understanding the theory. At this level, there should be better books out there. Considering how basic the book is, the price alone should dissuade you from buying it.

Richard Fries, PE, CSQE, CRE, is president of ISORel, Inc., a consulting firm located in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Wisconsin and is certified by the American Society for Quality as a Reliability Engineer and a Software Quality Engineer. Mr. Fries is a member of the IEEE Software Engineering Subcommittee. He was a member of the AAMI Medical Device Software Committee that developed IEC 62304. He was also a member of the AAMI Technical Committee that developed ISO 13485.

Book is a good survey book but nothing new. If you need more detail use Clyde C reveling dfss book. Has much of the same material but in much m ore detail on how to do things not just what to do.

About the Author
Mark Griffith is a professor of classics and of theater, dance, and performance studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Albany, CA. Trained at Cambridge, Griffith is an enormously accomplished expert on the Greek Tragedies. Glenn W. Most studied at Harvard, Oxford, and Yale and is currently professor of ancient Greek at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and a visiting member of the Committe on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He divides his time between Pisa, Florence, and Chicago. Richmond Lattimore (1906–1984) was a poet, translator, and longtime professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College. David Grene (1913–2002) taught classics for many years at the University of Chicago. He was a founding member of the Committee on Social Thought.

The Oresteia: Wellspring of Literature

Reading the original tragedians is a mind cleanse. Aeschylus has the knack for hard dark descriptions of destiny. Characters trapped in karmic trajectories that were initiated before they were even born. Abraham was stopped from killing Isaac, but Agamemnon's sacrifice of his favorite daughter to achieve the sack of Troy, brings down the famous house of Atreus. The description of her sacrifice curdles the blood & in the third play in the trilogy, the chorus of furies that chase Orestes, really gets off great lines in what is the world's 1st court room drama. Also Cltemnestra's dream of suckling a snake is a deep image for the ages.

Entertaining set of plays to read

This is a pretty decent set of plays by Aechylus. I found the format of the book very easy to follow and interesting to read.

I would recommend this book, as well as the first book (Aeschylus I) to anyone who want to read some of the Greek tragedies or anyone who wants to know more about this famous Greek tragedian. This book has the whole Oresteia within it, except for the final part, in which only fragments of the play survive, which the introduction of the book explains in greater detail.

THE translation of The Oresteia

Still the best combination for the average (undergrad) reader of accuracy and readability. Though I've never gotten over the fact that Lattimore inaccurately translates two DIFFERENT words as "daring," one of them being the Greek word "hubris." The result is that Helen is described as having hubris, directly contrary to the intent of the text (Paris, NOT Helen, is the epitome of hubris; Helen is something else, a kind of force of nature and a wild animal raised to deadly effect as a tame housepet, according to one metaphor).
