A WWII adventure book series.

The Author has set this adventure series during the WWII era. This particular book was the first in the series. Interesting reading about two teen agers and their adventures.

These Dave Dawson books ("at Dunkirk and "with the RAF) were left strategically around my parents' home when I was in grammar school and began to read.,They knew I was hooked on WWII airplanes and piloting, so they gave me novels about what I was interested in at a grammar school level, I gobbled them up, since I was a child during WWII, and was (and still am) mentally locked into WWII and the valiant and honorable performance of our citizen warriors, including my Uncle Frank who flew P-47's and P-51's in Europe and my Uncle Click who piloted an A-26 in the Pacific theater.Having recently reread this and "Dave Dawson with the R.A.F" I find the protagonists as squared away, patriotic, brave, and clean-cut as they had lingered in my memory over the many decades since I first met them. I wholeheartedly recommend these for any grammar and middle school children for several reasons: (1) these boys exude pure-minded, noble, and brave-hearted patriotism in the context of WWII in Europe (before the US entered the war); (2) they provide an excellent history lesson on the beginnings of WWII in Europe. Subsequent books in the series take them to Asia (which never read); (3) these books taught me that I could enjoy stories in novels like I never could experience in a 1.5 hour movie. Just because such values are archaic in today's world, I think these books would give grammar schoolers a solid boost in their character development. Just my opinion, of course, but you can bet my grandchildren (boys and girls) will get copies of these novels (on, perhaps with a, Kindle) when they get to 2nd grade..

Great Book!

I have read these books since I was in second grade, some 40 plus years ago. They still hold my attention from cover to cover! I can picture where they are and what they are doing and feeling. I would recommend this series to anyone who would like to feel as if they were in another time and place, if not for just a short time. You may get hooked on them as I did, and keep reading them in one sitting!

Required Textbook

Not one of the most useful textbooks ever. I find that the material is often different from that which I learn in class. The techniques that my professor teaches are not always easy to discern in the text. I honestly don't understand why I was required to purchase this book, as I have not utilized it at all. The few times I've turned to it for assistance, it did not offer any. Perhaps if my teacher taught more closely with the book, it might be more helpful to me. But I find that the notes I am provided with in class are much more useful than this text.

Good Fundamentals Book by a Talented Writer

This is an excellent book for the modern fundamentals of aircraft control design. Most subjects are clearly treated with just the right amount of illustrations and examples. The author makes good effort of explaining procedures without resorting to function calls from some software package. The last of the book devotes relatively little space to modern control theory. I would hope this talented writer would create something more advanced in the future that would expand on his treatment of the state observer and the use of the cost function.

Love in time for Christmas

Greg Sterling has struggled for years trying to raise cattle on his western land. When oil is discovered on his land, he is instantly rich! He returns east, hoping to see his old friends, and the old home where he lived before his mother died. Instead, he finds his old home is run down, and his friends have grown shallow and selfish.

As Greg looks out of his third floor luxury hotel room contemplating life's sadness, he sees a young woman faint and fall to the ground from her park bench. Greg rushes to help her, and takes her to the hospital. They learn that young Margaret McLaren is a poor penniless girl who has starved herself into exhaustion, trying to earn money to send home to her beloved grandparents who are just about to lose their farm.

Greg is much taken with this young woman, and arranges to pay all of her hospital bills, and to have her hospital room set up as a memorial in honor of his mother, as a free room for poor strangers. When the head nurse learns that a stranger has paid for Margaret's bills, she accuses Margaret of improper behavior. Margaret, still not well, flees the hospital. Margaret has no place to stay, and no money. She manages to find a poor job that first day addressing envelopes, and catnaps in the train station, moving around several times during the night so as not to be caught as a vagrant. She eats soup or coffee, rarely both, and manages to keep going for several more days.

In the meantime, Greg learns what the head nurse has done, and is frantic to find Margaret. He meets a friend who shows him all that Jesus has done for him, and he gives his heart to God. He then determines to set up a small business dedicated to helping people learn of God, and determines that Margaret is just the young woman to work as his secretary -- if he can find her.

Does he find her? And do her impoverished grandparents get to keep their farm?

I really, really enjoyed this book. I prefer GLH books with poor heroines who struggle against the odds, and this is such a story. I wish it had spent more time describing Margaret's days of struggle after leaving the hospital, instead it spent more on Greg's journey to find her. I enjoyed the homelike description of the grandparents' farm, even to the simple meals they ate. The ending was too fairy-tale-like to be believable, but still it was sweet. I have added this book to my permanent collection as one of my favorite GLH books.

Nothing blows up, there are no car chases and the future of the world is not in jeopardy yet "The Christmas Bride" is very exciting. Originally written in 1934 "The Christmas Bride" is a wonderful story of how God can take our circumstances and change them to the better. Greg Sterling left town because the townspeople thought he was worthless. Now wealthy he has returned to prove them wrong. Then he meets Margaret, who vanishes on him. As he tries to find her his old flame resurfaces. However his only interest is in Margaret. I think "The Christmas Bride" is an exciting story and a wonderful romance that will keep you reading as to what happens next. Ms. Hill knows how to tell a great story and while it may be old it still is a powerful story.

This has always been my favorite of Grace Livingston Hill's many titles, and I'm so glad Barbour Publishing is re-releasing her work. The Christmas Bride is heartwarming, encouraging, full of hope, and perseverance.
