One of the best BJJ Books

This book is incredible. I purchased it prior to a deployment I went on where I couldn't practice any Jiu-Jitsu. It covers everything from basics to advanced techniques with simple descriptions and multiple photographs at different angles. I highly recommend this book as a companion to a BJJ class or something to study when you are in an environment where you can't practice regularly.

Entertaining, clear, and mathematically rigorous

I taught a 3-week course on cryptology to academically gifted high school students and I found this book to be the perfect source. It is very clear and actually quite entertaining to read. And yet, I was so happy to see that no good mathematics were sacrificed.
Each chapter ends with 20 or so exercises which are doable and really help one to gain a fuller understanding of the concepts involved.
I would highly recommend this book to both the lay person and the professional mathematician who are interested in an introduction to cryptology.

My friend and I did a project for school on Cryptology and Albrecht Beutelspacher was our savior!!!! If it weren't for this book we would have flunked. Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan. In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. In 1999 the America Anthropological Association awarded Professor Kottak the AAA/Mayfield Award for Excellence in the Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology.

Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. Conrad Kottak's articles have appeared in academic journals including American Anthropologist, Journal of Anthropological Research, American Ethnologist, Ethnology, Human Organization, and Luso-Brazilian Review. He has also written for more popular journals, including Transaction/SOCIETY, Natural History, Psychology Today, and General Anthropology.

In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

Recently, Kottak was inducted to The National Academy of Sciences. This is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. .

Without a doubt the "Harry Potter" series has had a powerful effect on the Millennial Generation. Millions of children grew up immersed in the world of the boy wizard--reading the books, dressing up in costume to attend midnight book release parties, watching the movies, even creating and competing in Quidditch tournaments. Beyond what we know of the popularity of the series, however, nothing has been published on the question of the Harry Potter effect on the politics of its young readers--now voting adults.

Looking to engage his students in exploring the connections between political opinion and popular culture, Anthony "Jack" Gierzynski conducted a national survey of over 1,100 college students and examined these connections as well as Millennial politics. "Harry Potter and the Millennials" tells the fascinating story of how the team designed the study and gathered results, what conclusions can and cannot be drawn, and reveals the challenges social scientists face in studying political science, sociology, and mass communication.

Specifically, the evidence indicates that Harry Potter fans are more open to diversity and are more politically tolerant than nonfans; fans are also less authoritarian, less likely to support the use of deadly force or torture, more politically active, and more likely to have had a negative view of the Bush Administration. Furthermore, these differences do not disappear when controlling for other important predictors of these perspectives, lending support to the argument that the series indeed had an independent effect on its audience. In this clear and cogent account, Gierzynski demonstrates how social scientists develop and design research questions and studies. An appendix of questions and resulting data, including graphs, will appeal especially to instructors seeking to explain the nuances of political socialization.

Gierzynski's captivating analysis of media's impact on political views, combined with the enjoyable Potter story details, makes for an irresistible project that social scientists can use to work a little magic in their classrooms.

About the Author

Anthony Gierzynski is a professor of political science at the University of Vermont. He is author of Money Rules: Financing Elections in America; Legislative Party Campaign Committees in the American States; and Saving American Elections: A Diagnosis and Prescription for a Healthier Democracy. Kathryn Eddy is an artist and a writer for the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus.

A Great Read for Harry Potter Fans and Others

A very readable and fascinating book on the political effect of the Harry Potter phenomenon. A must read for fans of Harry Potter (I think they will love it). But you don't have to be a fan to find this fascinating because the book makes you think about the effects of other entertainment on our political views (the authors talk about other books, movies and shows in the book, like LOTR, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, and South Park).

This read like a very poorly written research paper. It attempted to be multidisciplinary. Attempted. It is really a shame because the topic had a lot of potential.

And he just happens to like to hide

You might remember me reviewing Find Momo last year - I adored it! Well, Momo is on the move again with his BFF Andrew Knapp. This time it's Find Momo Coast to Coast!

Who is Momo you ask? Well Momo is Andrew's border collie. And he just happens to like to hide. And he sits really still while Andrew takes a picture of him. Lots of pictures. Andrew started sharing them with his Instagram friends.....who shared them with their friends.... who shared it with.... and they now have over 250,000 followers!

Andrew and Momo are on the road again as...."adventure occurs when we embrace change. This book is a game of hide-and-seek, a record of our exploration and a review of the journey...which was, of course, the destination."

Coast to Coast takes the duo on a 15,000 mile journey through Canada and the US. And at 100 of their stops, Knapp takes a photo of Momo - hiding. The trick is, of course, to find Momo - although it's not as easy as you would think in some photos! There is an answer key in the back if you get stumped.

Knapp is a talented photographer. His shots range from landmarks to off the beaten path areas and attractions. It was those off the main track photos that I enjoyed the most. My only suggestion would have been to have the photos captioned with locations, although these can be found in the answer key as well.

And, as I did with Knapp's first book - I adored this one as well. There's great photography, the fun of playing hide and see with a border collie - but also the idea of packing up in yellow VW van and heading out to whatever adventure awaits - with a faithful dog.

Find Momo Coast to Coast is just one of those quirky books you can't help but flip through and enjoy. If you liked finding Waldo, you'll love finding Momo.

I'd Rather Be At The Beach: Reviews

Remember those Scholastic find the difference pictures? I loved them! Well this book is kind of like that but it’s only one photo and you have to find a dog. Momo is a border collie who loves hiding while his person takes photos of him. It’s fun to look for Momo, but it’s also neat to see all the photos of the places they travel.

I’ve been a Momo fan for a few years. I love trying to find him in the photos Knapp takes. Sometimes it’s easy to spot him, others it’s not. And sometimes I just give up after looking and looking, but I mark the pages I didn’t find him in and keep the book handy so I can go back and hunt for him again. And sometimes again.

This is a book everyone can enjoy, and it’s fun to do it together with another person or a few people to see who can spot Momo first!

This is the second Momo book, the first was Find Momo: A Photography Book. I haven’t checked it out yet but plan on buying a copy soon.

We found Momo!

What a great book! My 2 year old and I look for Momo every morning. She knew where he was in all of the pages of the first book, so we were so excited for the second edition! We hope there are many more to come!
