Swastika - More than just a symbol

Ajay is a first time author but he doesn't come across as one. If the clarity with which the author goes about building the protagonist, Zian's internal struggles as he tries to find himself is not proof enough to Ajay's story telling capabilities, the way with which he uses the Maharaj Ji's character (inspired by a real life Maharaj Ji whom the Author acknowledges in the credits) to answer all Zian's questions, should drive home that point on how good a story teller Ajay is. The most fascinating thing about this book is how everything physical that we know gets juxtaposed with the equivalent metaphysical aspects (which are hard to define). This not only needs a Maharaj Ji like a character, who has attained the state of Turiya, to explain them to Zian, but also a deep understanding of everything that encompasses these aspects by the author himself. Be it while explaining the ionic concentration of River Ganges or while rationalizing the need for religions, while subtly chiding superstitions or rituals without reasons, the book engages the reader thoroughly and encourages the reader to ask questions - ask questions even if they are mundane. Be it through liberal Star Wars references, which includes tracking down the alleged origin of "May the Force Be With You" (‘Aapko turiya avastha praapt ho’) or by building this fictional philosophy of a story in a modern setting that many could relate to (9/11, Steve Jobs, MacBook Pro, Social Media, Selfies, etc.), Ajay has managed to get across something very complex (the very essence of the book) in a not so complex manner.
A word on Himalayas - The author's love for Himalayas is evident from the beginning till the end. So much so, that through his ability to vividly capture the images of Himalayas throughout the book, he leaves the reader longing for a trek up the majestic mountains.
Finally, Swastika. As I closed the book, I now know not to look at Swastika as a mere symbolic representation of a racist Dictator's ideologies (as commonly represented in the western world since mid 20th century) but know that there is an enchanting journey behind Swastika.
One that could bring one closer to oneself.

"Lost Wisdom of Swastika" - a cultural lesson, captivating story and life's lessons all in one

I got done with reading Ajay's maiden book - Lost Wisdom of Swastika - several weeks ago and have been meaning to write my thoughts down ever since. I tried a couple of times but felt overwhelmed with the flurry of thoughts running through my mind. So I thought of waiting for a few days to let my thoughts settle down. Then work and life took over.
When I sat down to jot down my thoughts again, a strange feeling seized over me. It is difficult to describe that feeling where you feel, "yes! I got it!" yet have that nagging sensation as if you have missed something important.
So I decided to read the book again. And then I realized what was bothering me... I was missing the importance - both in storyline as well as in symbolism - of the twist at the end (PS: can't spoil it for others... hence not writing it here :)). Once I got it, I felt ready to put my thoughts in words.
Ajay has done an excellent job in taking reader though a storyline that traverses several paths yet keeps reader engaged in the main story line. Book contains a cultural lesson, meaning of something that has been lost since the most important symbol of an old culture (and nation) was usurped by deviants in middle of last century; a captivating story of friendship, happiness and tragedy; and lesson on living your life with a wisdom to make it count while enjoying the present around you.
Book covers a subject sensitive to good deal of humanity today - it talks about Swastika after all - yet masterly maintains the focus on the wisdom behind this old symbol, its true meaning and applicability to humanity. It teaches the true meaning of 'living' in language that common man can relate to, in a flow that makes you live the scenes while you read them. Yes, it so subtly gives you the kick at the end through twist in the storyline, where it all starts making sense.
You can read this book for its story, or for the wisdom or for the cultural history. In the end, you will feel like you absorbed life's worth of lessons in few hours it took you to read it.
PS (about the author): I met Ajay first several years ago - at the very onset of my post-student life (or 'free life' as I used to call it given the 2000 rupees I used to earn per month to spend howsoever I wished to). He impressed me with his carefree nature, positive attitude and infectious energy.
However after a few months, our ways parted to respective career paths. Next time we met was in Houston, when I went for an interview. I can't forget the image of him sitting outside the hotel lobby at 130AM (my flight got delayed and then I lost the directions... no GPS or phones, smart or otherwise... long story) waiting for me. That was the signature of a friend you could count on for never leaving your side... a friend who will wait for you even when you don't show up.
It gives me immense pleasure to see Ajay where he is ... a man of fine wisdom, a successful entrepreneur and above all a good human. So proud of you Ajay!

Swastika is a symbol of Wellbeing

Ajay Chaturvedi book Lost Wisdom of the Swastika #LostWisdomOfTheSwastika #LWOTS is a wonderful reading. I was able to identify with the main character in the book and the trials and tribulations of transition from materialistic to spiritual.
Swastika is a combination of Su + Asti + Ka; where Su meaning the Absolute state of truth and wellness; Asti meaning the physical being; Ka meaning symbol. In other words Swastika is a symbol of Wellbeing. Compare this with the modern day definition of Health: it is not just absence of disease rather it is defined as a state of mental, physical, spiritual wellbeing. Don’t you see parallels with the meaning of Swastika?
I feel it is a must read for all Doctors. The book bridges the gap between modern medical thinking and the holistic science of wellbeing. Doctors are supposed to treat the being not just the disease. But over time the race for specialization and super specializations has taken eyes off the whole being and created a narrow focus on the disease. The book prods us to go back to our roots and find a way to connect back with our vast inherent knowledge of life that has managed to survive the onslaught of time.
